Collection: Samuel Hill - Working

Samuel Hill (fl. 1790s–1820s) was an American engraver and publisher active in Boston, Massachusetts. He worked primarily in copperplate engraving, producing portraits, maps, book illustrations, and title-page vignettes during the Federal period. Hill’s engravings appeared in early American publications such as The Massachusetts Magazine, The Boston Magazine, and various historical and religious works issued by Boston printers.

Known for his clean line and careful draftsmanship, Hill was one of New England’s leading engravers of the late 18th century. His work documents the emerging print culture of post-Revolutionary America, when locally produced engravings were beginning to replace imported European prints in books and periodicals.
