A 19th-century lithograph of the Pictured Rocks Cliffs, called the "Triumphal Arch," in this mid-19th-century depiction. These vibrant and striking cliffs rise 50 to 200 feet above Lake Superior. The most vividly colored section starts east of Miners Beach. Named "Pictured Rocks" due to the mineral streaks that adorn the weathered sandstone, these cliffs showcase stunning hues of red and orange caused by groundwater seeping through cracks and carrying iron deposits down the rock face.
