A fine example of Jacques Nicolas Bellin’s map of Brazil, published in Prevost's L'Histoire Generale des Voyages. The engraving shows Rio de Janeiro and a large portion of the coastline extending northward, with harbors, rivers, and settlements clearly marked. Bellin (1703–1772), one of the most important French cartographers of the eighteenth century, served as the first Ingenieur Hydrographe de la Marine and later as Hydrographer to the French crown. His maps combined precision with elegance and became reference works for European exploration and navigation. Manuscript number in lower margin "No. 297"
