From Montanus' "De Nieuwe en Onbekende Weereld: of Beschryving van America". This view shows the Dutch fleet attacking the town of Olinda in Pernambuco, Brazil. Founded by the Portuguese in 1537, Olinda's rich sugar cane plantations made it a center for Portuguese commerce in Brazil, and one of their most prized possessions. It was captured by the Dutch in 1630 and burned to the ground. It is this important battle that is depicted here.
