Collection: William Bartlett H.

William Henry Bartlett (1809–1854) was a British artist, illustrator, and topographical draughtsman celebrated for his finely detailed steel engravings of landscapes and architecture. Born in London, he studied under architect John Britton, whose influence fostered Bartlett’s lifelong focus on scenic and historic subjects rendered with architectural precision.

During his career, Bartlett traveled extensively throughout Britain, Europe, the Middle East, and North America, creating sketches that were engraved for widely published volumes such as American Scenery (1839–1840), The Scenery and Antiquities of Ireland (1841–1842), and Switzerland Illustrated (1836). His romantic yet accurate views helped introduce readers to distant lands and cities during the golden age of travel illustration. Bartlett died in 1854 while returning from a sketching trip to the Holy Land.
