Collection: Titian Ramsay Peale

Titian Ramsay Peale (1799–1885) was an American naturalist, explorer, and artist, and a member of the famed Peale family of painters and scientists. Born in Philadelphia, he was the youngest son of Charles Willson Peale and grew up immersed in art and natural history, assisting in his father’s museum from an early age.

Peale joined several major scientific expeditions, most notably the U.S. Exploring Expedition (1838–1842) under Charles Wilkes, where he served as a natural history artist, documenting flora, fauna, and landscapes across the Pacific. His detailed drawings and watercolors of birds, insects, and mammals combined scientific accuracy with artistic refinement. A skilled taxidermist and illustrator, Peale contributed significantly to early American natural history, bridging the disciplines of art and science in the spirit of Enlightenment inquiry.
