Collection: T. Addison Richards
Thomas Addison Richards (1820–1900) was a British-born American landscape painter, illustrator, and author associated with the Hudson River School. Born in London, he immigrated with his family to the United States in 1831, settling first in New York and later in Georgia, where he began sketching the Southern landscape. His early drawings appeared in illustrated journals, leading to a successful career as a painter and illustrator of American scenery.
Richards contributed extensively to publications such as The Ladies’ Companion and Harper’s Monthly, and he illustrated and authored American Scenery (1854), a landmark volume celebrating the nation’s natural beauty. A member of the National Academy of Design, he also served as art editor for Appletons’ Journal. His works capture the romantic spirit and refined observation characteristic of mid-19th-century American landscape art.
