Collection: Nicolas de Larmessin

Nicolas de Larmessin IV (1640–1725) was a French engraver and print publisher from Paris, best known for his ingenious Habit de Métiers series—whimsical portraits depicting tradesmen, scholars, and professionals dressed entirely in the instruments and emblems of their occupations. The fourth and most accomplished engraver of the Larmessin dynasty, he combined sharp social observation with remarkable technical precision, creating prints that are at once humorous, allegorical, and richly detailed.

Beyond these fanciful compositions, Larmessin also engraved portraits, religious scenes, and decorative works after leading painters of Louis XIV’s reign, including Charles Le Brun and Pierre Mignard. His engravings reflect both the elegance and discipline of late 17th- and early 18th-century French printmaking. The Habit de Métiers series remains his most enduring legacy—a brilliant blend of satire, craftsmanship, and visual poetry that continues to captivate audiences today.
