Collection: John Scoles
John Scoles (active 1790s–1830s) was an American engraver and publisher based in New York City, known for his maps, book illustrations, and decorative title-page vignettes during the early 19th century. Working in a period when engraving was essential to American printing, Scoles produced finely detailed copperplate and steel engravings for atlases, almanacs, and historical works.
He contributed illustrations to publications such as The New York Magazine and The New York Repository, and engraved maps for leading publishers including Jedidiah Morse and Matthew Carey. Scoles’s precise line work and technical skill placed him among the early generation of professional engravers who helped establish New York as a center of American printmaking.
