John Andrew (1815–1870) was a British-born American engraver and printmaker who played a key role in advancing wood engraving in the United States. Born in England, he trained in the art of engraving before emigrating to Boston, where he established the influential firm John Andrew & Son. His workshop became one of the leading engraving houses of the mid-19th century, producing illustrations for major publishers including Harper’s Weekly, Ballou’s Pictorial, and The Atlantic Monthly.

Andrew’s engravers were known for their precision and fidelity to the artist’s original drawings, helping define the high standard of American illustrated journalism. Through his technical skill and leadership, John Andrew contributed significantly to the golden age of wood engraving in America.
