Collection: J. Woodward D.

John Douglas Woodward (1846–1924) was an American landscape and architectural illustrator known for his detailed work in books and magazines of the late 19th century. Born in New York City, he trained as an artist under F. E. Church and other Hudson River School painters before turning to illustration, a field in which he gained national recognition.

Woodward contributed extensively to Picturesque America (1872–1874) and similar series such as Picturesque Palestine, Picturesque Europe, and Picturesque Mediterranean, where his drawings captured cities, monuments, and landscapes with accuracy and atmosphere. His ability to blend artistic composition with documentary precision made him one of the foremost illustrators of topographical works in the late Victorian era.
