Collection: Herrmann Meyer

Herrmann Julius Meyer (1826–1909) was a German publisher and philanthropist best known for continuing the legacy of his father, Joseph Meyer, founder of the Bibliographisches Institut in Hildburghausen. Under his leadership, the firm expanded its reach through the production of affordable, high-quality atlases, encyclopedias, and illustrated books, making education and geography more accessible to the public.

Meyer oversaw the publication of works such as Meyers Universum and Meyers Konversations-Lexikon, both of which combined scholarly accuracy with fine steel engravings and maps. His commitment to education and social welfare reflected his belief in the democratization of knowledge, a principle that guided his publishing career throughout the 19th century.
