Collection: Henry Sandham
Henry Sandham (1842–1910) was a Canadian painter and illustrator known for his historical and genre scenes. Born in Montreal, he began his career at William Notman’s photographic studio, where he learned the principles of composition and collaborated on photo-based composite works that bridged photography and fine art. He later moved to Boston, where his illustrations appeared in major publications such as Harper’s Monthly and Century Magazine.
Sandham’s work often depicted everyday life, military subjects, and moments from Canadian and American history with careful realism and attention to atmosphere. He exhibited at the Royal Academy in London and the Paris Salon, earning recognition for his ability to combine narrative storytelling with painterly technique.
