Collection: Cleveland S. Rockwell

Cleveland Salter Rockwell (1837–1907) was an American cartographer and artist. Born in Youngstown, Ohio, he joined the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey in 1856 and served as a topographical engineer during the Civil War. After the war, he continued survey work along the Pacific Coast, producing accurate maps and charts.

Settling in Portland, Oregon, Rockwell became known for his detailed landscape paintings and drawings of the Columbia River and surrounding regions. His work combined the precision of an engineer with the eye of an artist, earning him recognition as one of the Northwest’s early professional painters.
