It was the Union's second attempt to cut the Weldon Railroad, a key Confederate supply line into Petersburg. Union casualties exceeded 4,000, compared to about 1,600 Confederate losses, but the Federals succeeded in tearing up nearly 30 miles of track, forcing the Confederates to move supplies by wagon.
