This map, drawn from Mitchell's New General Atlas, is among the earliest printed depictions of Alaska following its transfer from Russia to the United States in 1867. The image captures the new American territory in detail, extending from the Aleutian Islands across to the Pacific Northwest and Vancouver Island. Mitchell's cartographic style is evident in the careful rendering of coastlines and settlements, while the decorative grapevine border adds a distinctive ornamental flourish, typical of his atlas maps of the period.
