A fine image that appeared in "Histoire Naturelle Generale et Particulaire" by George-Louis Le Clerc, Comte de Buffon. The 44 volumes were published from 1749 to 1804, although Buffon died in 1788. Director of the Jardin du Roi in France, Buffon was the first to present the universe as a unified whole.
