Jan Zamoyski (1542-1605) was a powerful Polish nobleman, statesman, and military commander in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Serving as Grand Chancellor and Grand Hetman, he was instrumental in shaping the politics of his time, defending the Commonwealth's independence, and leading campaigns against foreign threats. Zamoyski also founded the city of Zamosc, which became a prominent cultural and academic center.
