Edward of Woodstock (1330-1376), known to history as the Black Prince, was the eldest son of Edward III of England and heir to the throne. Renowned as one of the greatest English military leaders of the Middle Ages, he won decisive victories during the Hundred Years' War, notably at Crecy in 1346 and Poitiers in 1356, where he captured the French king. Though he predeceased his father and never became king, his reputation as a chivalric warrior endured for centuries.
